Special Event: Chopin and Liszt Competition

 Created in honor of two giant composers of the Romantic Era: Chopin and Liszt, this special competition will take place only in the US. The Preliminary Round of the IPPA Conero Chopin and Liszt Competition will coincide with the Preliminary Round of the IPPA Conero Preliminary Round, and the Final Round will take place at the same time and location as the IPPA Conero Semifinal Round. Winners of the Chopin and Liszt Competition will not proceed to the IPPA Conero Final Round – this is a separate event.

Preliminary round: all candidates will receive award certificates and detailed comments.
Final round: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of each group with be awarded trophies and award certificates. All finalists will receive certificates and detailed comments.

Awards concert: 4:00 pm June 5th, 2022 at Munson Hall, Los Angeles.

  • Open to people who live in the US including international students.
  • Apply below using the Preliminary Round application.
  • The Preliminary Round will take place online. The Final round will take place in person or online if the participant is not able to travel.
  • Repertoire: You may play work(s) by either Chopin/Liszt OR you may mix works of these two composers as you wish. (See the details below)
  • Participants may apply for multiple categories with the same repertoire, if the repertoire follows the rules for both categories. For example: Chopin and Liszt Category and Young Artist Category.
  • Ages need to be determined as of June 4th, 2022.

Adult Group A (Age 22 – 35)
Preliminary round:  Any one or two composition(s) by Chopin or Liszt, no more than 12 mins.
Final Round: two or more works by Chopin or Liszt within 17 mins. Including an Etude is required (by either Chopin or Liszt).  Contestants can repeat the same composition from the previous round.

Adult Group B (Age 18 – 21)
Preliminary Round:  Any one or two composition(s) by Chopin or Liszt, no more than 10 mins.
Final Round: two or more works by Chopin or Liszt within 15 mins. Including an Etude is required (by either Chopin or Liszt). Contestants can repeat the same composition from the previous round.

Youth Group A (Age 15-17)
Preliminary Round:  Any one composition by Chopin or Liszt, no more than 8 mins.
Final Round: two or more works by Chopin or Liszt within 12 mins. Including an Etude is required (by either Chopin or Liszt).  Contestants can repeat the same composition from the previous round.

Youth Group B (Age 12-14)
Preliminary Round:  Any one composition by Chopin or Liszt, no more than 7 mins.
Final Round: One or two works by Chopin or Liszt within 10 mins. Contestants can repeat the same composition from the previous round. Including an Etude (by either Chopin or Liszt) is preferred.

Youth Group C (Age 9-11)
Preliminary Round:  Any one composition by Chopin or Liszt, no more than 5 mins.
Final Round: One or more works by Chopin or Liszt within 7 mins. Contestants can repeat the same composition from the previous round. Two pieces are preferred.

Conero Competition

Preliminary Round: April 30th, 2022

Application Fee:$30 USD
