Concert Pianist

Praised for her “crystal-clear, luminous sound” and “sensitive playing”, Indonesian pianist Stephanie Onggowinoto has performed throughout Europe, Asia and the United States as a solo artist and chamber musician. She made her concerto debut at the age of 11 and has since then appeared regularly as a soloist with many leading Indonesian orchestras.

Stephanie has achieved much success in prestigious international piano competitions, including winning prizes at the Joan Chissell Schumann Piano Competition in the UK and the Ettlingen International Piano Competition for Young Pianists in Germany, and strong finish at the International Mozart Piano Competition in Austria. Stephanie is also the Grand Prize Winner of Wibi Soerjadi’s Competition and recipient of the first Adam Gyorgy Award, the latter which earned her a New York debut at Carnegie’s Weill Hall.

Highlights of the past seasons include engagements with the Jakarta City Philharmonic (Budi Utomo Prabowo) at Tokyo Opera City Hall in Japan as part of the Asia Orchestra Week, Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra (Rebecca Tong/Dr Stephen Tong/Thanapol Setabrahmana) at Aula Simfonia Jakarta, Jakarta Sinfonietta (Iswargia Sudarno), Jakarta Concert Orchestra (Avip Priatna) and duo recital with violinist Eric Lacrouts.

 

Stephanie received her Artist Diploma in Performance from the Royal College of Music in London as an Alida Johnson Award Holder. She attained her Master of Music and Bachelor of Music in Performance with Distinction and First Class Honours, studying with Leon McCawley and Norma Fisher. Stephanie’s studies were generously supported by the Neville Wathen and Frederick Cox Scholarship. Stephanie also had the privilege to have studied under Christopher Elton (London), Iswargia Sudarno, Suwarni Hanitio, Yenny Djafar and Johannes Nugroho, and to have worked in masterclasses with esteemed artists, such as the late Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, Jan Wijn, Robert Levin, Dmitri Alexeev, and Jahja Ling.

 

During her college days, besides solo engagements, Stephanie also performed regularly as a duo and trio with colleagues from the RCM. They received coaching from Felix Andrievsky, Kathron Sturrock, Mark Messenger, Gaby Lester, Alina Ibragimova and Matthew Trusler of Trio Apaches.

 

Back at home in Indonesia, Stephanie has given talks, performances and masterclasses to the students of UPH Conservatory, Bandung International Music Academy, Jakarta Conservatory of Music, Gloriamus Music School, Melodi Music Semarang and Amazing House of Music Yogyakarta in hope to share her experiences. She has also served as a juror in several national and international piano competitions and as an assistant teacher for the Piano House Festival and Adam Gyorgy Academy.
